Photographers Who Inspire: Getting to Know Holly Awwad

Awwad_SummerUnplugged.jpg

This weeks featured photographer is Holly Awwad ( Holly Nicole Timekeeper on IG) I am always in awe of every single image she posts! It’s like every single image gets better and better ( if that is even possible!!) She’s absolutely, insanely talented! I adore the storytelling in her imagery , it really draws me right in. Please enjoy getting to know Holly, then go and follow her on IG

What got you started in photography?

Like many mom-togs I got serious about photography once my kids were born. I've always been drawn to photography and actually learned to shoot and develop film in college. However, it wasn't until my girls were born that my passion for photography was reignited. I got my first DSLR after my second daughter was born, and really got intentional with shooting and learning when my third daughter was born in 2013.

What three words describe your photographic style?

Honest. Emotive. Storytelling.

What’s your favorite compositional technique?

I would have to say shooting through something. Whether its shooting through plants/trees or shooting through a plastic bag or copper pipe, shooting through an object or structure can add such amazing depth and interest to an image.

Tell me a bit about your biz! Are you only personal work, or a mix of personal and client?

Currently I'm strictly a hobby photographer. I've tried shooting clients in the past and have found the business side isn't what makes my heart happy. I am branching out this year to start teaching and mentoring and working with other photographers is what makes my heart sing.

How would you describe your ultimate dream shoot or personal project?

My dream shoot would be to shoot my children in Hawaii. We love to travel and any time we visit a new place a fire of creativity is lit inside of me. Hawaii is the most amazing place I've ever been and it's been my dream to take my children back with me.

What’s one of the most interesting experiences you’ve ever had in a session or personal project?

As I said before, I no longer shoot clients. However, I do still do sessions for friends and family from time to time. My favorite session EVER was an engagement session I did for our friend. It was the first time I had a session that encouraged me to shoot in my style and be creative. They asked me to do their engagement session because they loved my work, not because they wanted me to recreate a bunch of shots they found on Pinterest. This really boosted my confidence and also resulted in some of my favorite images I've ever shot of people outside of my immediate family.

What’s your favourite image you’ve ever taken (please share, and tell me the story behind the image)?

This is such a hard question! I have so many favorites. But I would have to say a recent favorite of mine is this image above taken in the fall of all three of my girls. Whenever I get all of my girls in the frame it makes me so happy. This trip to the dunes happened to be my first trip at sunset, and the light was magical. The wind in their hair and all three of them together made it just perfect. I treasure this image.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to get started in photography?

My biggest advice would be to do a 52 week or 365 project. I learned so much doing personal projects. It helped me learn how to shoot in manual, really learn my gear and develop my style. It is the best tool for growth I've experienced on my journey.

If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be?

I worked at a Credit Union in Marketing for 15 years before I quit to stay home with my girls. So if I wasn't a photographer, or a mom, I would likely be working there. If I could do school all over again I would probably be an elementary school teacher. I love children and having the summers off to spend with my family is very important.
