There is a special kind of magic that comes with outdoor, fall photo sessions. The leaves lightly falling and the autumn light create a lovely backdrop for any photo session. I sought out some amazing artists and asked for their best tips on creating beautiful fall imagery and here is what they had to say.
First up is Gina Yeo ( you can follow her IG account HERE)
1. Colour: During the fall there is beautiful colour in the changing of the seasons. I like to include more environment, in my images, so that I can incorporate that beautiful fall colour.
2. Weather: Fall brings weather changes where I live including wind and fog. I like to capture this weather in my images if I can.
3. Details: We like to explore and the fall is no exception. I like to remember to focus on capturing the fall details too.
Next, the lovely Cami Turpin ( You can follow her HERE)
“ You don't have to wait for golden hour to get gorgeous color and warm tones during the fall. I love using full sun to make the most of those vivid colors. I especially love backlighting through the leaves to create a luminous effect.”
Next up, the amazing Shay Cathleen ( You can follow her IG HERE)
“To really make your fall colours pop add a bit more saturation while in Lightroom or photoshop, I just added a tad to these images to really make the fall colours come through!!!!”
And finally the wonderful Bri Viglianco ( You can follow her IG HERE)
“My biggest tip for fall shots is not to over think it. I know a lot of the times you imagine a picture with a bunch of trees, each of them their own color. That is beautiful, yes, but there is so much beauty in the details of fall. Focus on little things that make this season so amazing!”
What amazing tips and examples of what to capture from some amazing artists! I highly encourage you to go and follow their IG accounts right now, you won’t be sorry!
I have a few to add myself!
Make sure you incorporate color!! Even though fall and winter have some amazing colors to work with, why not wear a splash of color to really stand out in your photos? For example, vibrant shades of blues and greens look amazing amongst crunchy brown leaves.
Of course we also need to keep in mind a few things for the actual sessions Here are a few more to keep in mind:
First of all, Dress warmly. You will be surprised at how often this is overlooked. Since you’ll be standing outside for a long period of time, short sleeves, thin fabrics, and open toe shoes will not be comfortable for very long. Shivering makes it hard to look happy and pose properly.
Wear sunscreen. Protecting your skin should be a priority throughout the year, not just in summer. Use a good moisturizer to protect your skin from chilly winds.
Watch the weather. Warmer days may seem more pleasant but melting snow can change the entire look of your backdrop. If you are looking for light snow flurries, try and keep an eye on the weather forecast to make sure that you don’t end up with melting or heavy snow.
Be flexible. If the weather isn't exactly what you had hoped for, see if you can still make the photo session work. If you are however scheduling this session in advance, you may just have to work with the weather on that particular day.
Plan your day. Taking your photos just after the sun rises or just before it sets will provide you with amazing lighting so try and plan your session around those times.
*And as an added bonus, why not take some hot tea or coffee along to make your photo session even more enjoyable? Sounds good to me! I need to get out there and start shooting!
What about You? What tips do you have?
